Outen Park Main Gate WW1 Memorial Pillars
We have created a list of names for the proposed plaques on the new pillars. Through lots of research we have tried to ascertain connections to the Underbool, Linga,Torrita and Boinka areas.
Criteria for making the list is as follows:
• Name on Rolls of Honour Boards in the above towns
• If the person was born here/worked here/ or had immediate family in these towns
• Awarded soldier settlement blocks after WW1
Initially the Rolls of Honour names were checked – research suggests some of the spelling is incorrect, and initials may be those of nicknames rather than the person’s real name, and asterisks (paying the Supreme Sacrifice) have been put in the wrong place. Every endeavour has been made to find the relevant information about each person on the Honour Rolls.
More names have been added through places of enlistment, and soldier settlement allocations.
To date we are still trying to find information on Bachelor A , Donald J and Newham R (Underbool Roll of Honour) and Donohue J (Torrita Roll of Honour). A Vision Realised 1988 mentions a Methodist Minister AR Newnham 1926-27 and there was a schoolteacher in Underbool Robert Donohue 1927-28. Donald could be McDonald as in John Dougal McDonald – Underbool. Re Donohue, a news item suggests a person of that name attended a funeral in the area.
The list must be finalized by March 21st for the plaques to be finished by Anzac Day.
This list is NOT the final list. If you have any information, queries or comments please contact Fran 0409509463. We need your help.
NB The MRCC funding was for 2 new pillars to display WW1 names. This is the first part of the project. Additional funding will need to be obtained in the future for WW2 and later enlistments and could be for additional pillars or perhaps freestanding memorial within the Park itself.
Copies of the lists are on the two noticeboards in Underbool, and at Glosters Garage.
