Letter to the Community from the

Underbool Golf Club

It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter to inform the local community that the Underbool Golf Club will be closing this season and cease to exist.

We tried to soldier on over the last two seasons, but due to lock downs and a lack of memberships and community interest, we only managed one or two rounds of golf for the 2021 season and no rounds during 2020. It costs the club approximately $2000.00 to run each year. These costs include power, water, affiliations, incorporation, insurance and other general expenses. With declining memberships, no green fees or other fundraising possibilities, it is impossible to keep the club running financially.

However, the financial running costs are only one part of keeping the golf club going.  The maintenance of the golf course is the major factor in the ongoing running of any club.  With nine fairways to be sprayed and then mowed on a regular basis and sands to be oiled and then raked every week, it takes a lot of manhours to maintain. This is something we have no longer been able to do in our club.  In past years we have been lucky to have several retired community members who were a huge part of our club.  They mowed, raked, scraped and did everything else you can think of to have the course in tip top condition for us all to play on every week.

As we have witnessed all over our Mallee District, small towns have been steadily losing their sporting clubs due to the declining number of families within the community. In Underbool we used to have both Senior and Junior Tennis, Senior and Junior Cricket and our own footy club.  Unfortunately, the same is now happening to our much-loved Golf Club.

At our recent AGM the motion was moved to close the club.  I have been speaking to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) to find out “what happens next”.

As the clubhouse is situated on the Race Course Reserve, (which is Crown Land) the committee of management of the reserve takes ownership of the building.  After all assets are sold or disposed of, the keys are to be handed over to the RCR committee.  It will take several months for us to plan and organise the disposal of the assets so we will remain incorporated for 2022.  Any remaining funds in our account are to be donated to “not for profit” community/charity programs.

We are hoping to have a special “Event” at the Clubhouse in the coming months where all ex-golfers will be invited to get together and share some of their wonderful memories of “Golf in Underbool”. The bus trips for fun windup days to Wentworth, Coomealla, Nyah, Manangatang and everywhere in between, attending local tournaments, the twigs on the way home, getting bogged, our club fun days and too many other things to list here. Please keep your eye out for any information regarding this “Event”.

May your drives always be straight and your balls always land on the fairway!!
