Carers Week

Carers are family members or friends who provide unpaid care and support for another person.  Some people whom experience disability, challenges with health concerns and terminal illness, mental health un-wellness  and addiction, are able to remain independent and empowered with the support of a trusted companion. Carers enrich and can change people’s lives.

Anyone can be a carer, but many people don’t identify as one. Caring may include help and support with a range of daily activities, including dressing, showering, arranging doctors’ appointments, managing medications and providing psychosocial support.

Carers are an important part of Australia’s health system and are the foundation of our aged, disability, palliative and community care systems.

October 11-17 was Carers week, which gives us a chance to show appreciation for Carers in our families and communities.

Carer Gateway provides a range of supports and services to carers around Australia. On their website (carergateway.gov.au) you can access information and advice, peer support, free counselling, coaching and training. Each region in Australia has a Carer Gateway service provider who can let you know what supports and services are available in your area.

If you are a carer and you need more support please contact me at Mallee Track Health and Community Service, I can help you find information and services that can support your needs. Carer support groups operate locally in Ouyen and Murrayville.
